Painter Hat Ideas
This a compliation of ideas was posted to WAGGGS-L January 2000.
I just did tie-dye painter hats with my Brownies.
Sharpie permanent markers. There were about 7 different colored markers in
the package I bought.
small rubber bands
rubbing alcohol
cotton tipped swabs
Pinch a section of the hat. Wrap the rubber band on. Use the marker to
color next to the rubber band, trying to get the inside folds colored also.
Dip a swab in the alcohol and dot it on the section you colored. This
spreads the color.

We did this a couple of years ago for a parade. We used painters caps,
hot-glued fake flowers, bees, etc. to the brim (tight up next to where it
meets the cap - for balance), and touched up with glitter glue. They were a
huge hit and it was very easy to count heads. I was planning on gluing pipe
cleaners on, then gluing the bees on top (for an antennae effect), but ran
out of time and only did my hat.

Here is a good idea for those painters caps, last year my brownies made
squirt tye dye hats. Very easy..we used 3 squirt bottles filled half way up
with liquid dye and then added hot water. The girls just squirted or
dribbled and the combinations turned out unique and beautiful! We took them
home and rinsed and dried and then put each girls initials with fabric paint.
They were a big hit and continue to bring them to camp-outs and trips!
We used big tin pans for them to squirt into. Then put the dyed hat into a
plastic bag after writing initials on the tag.

You could ti-dye them, or some of the younger girls might like bows sewn on
the top of them. I would suggest bright, fluorescent colors for paint.

There is a felt that is sold with a self-adhesive back on it. Not only
is it very easy to cut and stick it on the hats, but if you want it to be
a different design each time you go somewhere, it can peel right off,
too! It is sold near the other felts, it's shouldn't be too hard to
find.

We bought florescent green and bought the special glue for beads on hats..
At least the color will stand out..
